Professor Karen Brown is Director of the Leicester Cancer Research Centre and joint lead of the Leicester Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre. She co-chairs the UK Therapeutic Cancer Prevention Network and represents this network on the steering group of the Cancer Prevention Europe Consortium. Her research focuses on discovering and translating chemopreventive agents for high-risk populations, leading major trials like COLO-PREVENT investigating resveratrol, aspirin, and metformin in colorectal polyp prevention. Funded by Cancer Research UK, this trial operates across 60 UK sites. Karen holds leadership roles across multiple national/international grant panels, including the Cancer Research UK Prevention and Population Research Committee, and sits on panels for the World Cancer Research Fund International and Breast Cancer Now.
Her work bridges preclinical discovery and clinical implementation, emphasizing pharmacodynamic biomarkers and drug metabolism. Key contributions include advancing understanding of metabolic pathways in cancer prevention, BRAF mutation-driven colorectal neoplasia, and diabetes-cancer comorbidity. She advocates for European cancer prevention initiatives through Cancer Prevention Europe and addresses healthcare inequities in screening and treatment access for ethnic minorities and diabetes patients. Karen’s research portfolio spans over 50 peer-reviewed articles, with recent work exploring resveratrol’s microbiome effects and curcumin’s role in colorectal therapy.
Professional service includes Vice-Chair roles on grant review panels and former presidency of the UK Environmental Mutagen Society. Her lab develops ex vivo models to assess patient-specific responses to cancer prevention agents and collaborates internationally on guidelines for familial cancer syndromes like FAP and MUTYH-associated polyposis.
