Professor Karen Anthony is Professor of Molecular Medicine at the University of Northampton within the School of Life and Environmental Science. She leads the Molecular Biosciences Research Group and maintains affiliations with the Centre for Physical Activity and Life Sciences and the Northamptonshire Dementia Research & Innovation Centre. Dr. Anthony teaches across multiple undergraduate programs including Biological Science, Biochemistry, Pharmacology and Biomedical Science, serving as Module Leader for Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience and contributing to the MSc in Molecular Medicine program.
Her educational background includes:
- Master's degree and PGCert in Research Degree Supervision from the University of Northampton (2016-2017)
- PhD in 'tau RNA processing in neurodegeneration: trans-acting factors regulating alternative splicing and mRNA localisation' from King's College London (2005-2009)
- BSc (Hons) Biochemistry with medical biochemistry from the University of Leeds (2001-2005)
- City & Guilds licentiateship award in applied biochemistry from GlaxoSmithKline (2003-2004)
Professor Anthony's research focuses on RNA processing and the pre-clinical development of RNA therapeutics for rare neurological diseases. Her work spans multiple areas including Duchenne muscular dystrophy neuropathophysiology, the DMD gene's role in cancer, RNA processing of dystrophin, therapeutic targeting of brain dystrophin, RNA processing in neurodegeneration, and RNA-based gene therapy. She has established proof-of-concept for RNA reprogramming strategies including trans-splicing therapies for spinocerebellar ataxia type 1 and tauopathies, building on her earlier contributions to the first FDA-approved drug for DMD.
Her recent publications demonstrate a strong translational focus, bridging molecular biology with clinical applications across neurological disorders and cancer. The research shows increasing interdisciplinary collaboration, integrating molecular techniques with cognitive assessment, exercise physiology, and patient-centered interventions to address rare diseases from multiple angles.
Professor Anthony actively consults for international pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies on clinical trial methodology and RNA therapeutic development. She has secured funding for eight major projects including the Northampton Advanced Imaging Facility and research on trans-splicing applications for rare diseases. Her work has contributed to the development of the first FDA-approved drug for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, demonstrating significant translational impact.
She leads the Molecular Biosciences Research Group and is instrumental in developing the Northampton Advanced Imaging Facility (NAIF), which serves as a hub for flow cytometry and advanced imaging. Her team collaborates extensively with clinical researchers and industry partners to advance RNA therapeutics from bench to bedside, with particular focus on rare neurological conditions affecting both children and adults.
