Kamel Itani, M.D. is a Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at UT Southwestern Medical Center with extensive training including medical school at American University - Beirut (1982), residency at American University Medical Center (1986) in Ophthalmology, and fellowship training at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (1987) and University of Michigan Medical School (1989) in Eye Plastic, Orbital, & Reconstructive Surgery.
His research focuses on ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery, particularly eyelid reconstruction after Mohs surgery, ptosis repair techniques, and lipid metabolism in ocular surface disorders. His laboratory investigations into meibomian gland function have advanced understanding of dry eye syndrome pathophysiology while his clinical studies have established evidence-based approaches to complex periocular reconstruction.
Dr. Itani's publication record spans over two decades with recent work (2022-2025) examining facial asymmetry in congenital ptosis, periocular reconstruction using dermal regeneration templates, and molecular mechanisms of lipid metabolism in ocular surface disorders. His research integrates clinical observations with biochemical analysis to address complex challenges in oculoplastic surgery.
His systematic reviews on eyelid reconstruction techniques and Mohs surgery management have become standard references in the field, providing comprehensive analysis of surgical outcomes and complication rates. His work bridges basic science with clinical application to improve patient care in ophthalmic plastic surgery.
