Kaleb C. Lund is a core faculty member and Chair of the Department of Botanical Medicine at Bastyr University's School of Naturopathic Medicine. His work bridges chemistry, toxicology, and botanical medicine, focusing on plant-human biochemical interactions and mitochondrial health.
- Education:
- PhD in Toxicology, University of Minnesota (2007)
- MS in Chemistry, University of Minnesota (2004)
- BS in Biochemistry, University of Minnesota (2000)
- Postdoctoral training in Herbal Science at Bastyr University (2010)
Dr. Lund's research explores botanical medicine through three pillars: 1) Phytochemical analysis of medicinal plants using HPLC/GC-MS, 2) Investigating mitochondrial bioenergetics and toxicity mechanisms, and 3) Developing in vitro models to replace animal testing. His projects include studying Devil's Club's anti-inflammatory properties and Salvia divinorium's potential for treating addiction.
Scientific contributions include establishing methods for in vitro intestinal absorption modeling (2014) and identifying reserpine in Crossvine (2012). His work spans pharmacognosy, dietary supplement regulation, and analytical chemistry of complex herbal products.
He has mentored 18 student research projects and received industry funding for absorption studies. Dr. Lund also integrates ecological, emotional, and spiritual perspectives into plant medicine through his practice as a clinical herbalist.
