Kal Alston is a Professor in the Department of Cultural Foundations of Education at the School of Education, Syracuse University. His work bridges philosophy of education, race studies, and ethical practice in education. He holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy of Education from the University of Chicago (1989) and a B.A. in Acting/Directing from Dartmouth College (1980).
Research focuses on race, justice, and ethics in education, including analyses of cultural conflict in classrooms, embodied knowledge traditions, and the intersections of race and pedagogy. Recent work interrogates systemic inequities through articles like *Why 'I Can’t Breathe'* and *Philosophies of Race, Justice, and Education*.
Leadership roles include serving as President of the Philosophy of Education Society (2020-2021) and Co-Leader of Faculty for Racial Equity in Education (F.R.E.E.). He chairs multiple committees addressing harassment policies, diversity initiatives, and professional ethics in academia.
Teaching includes courses like *Education for Transformation* and *Selected Topics in Race and Memory*. Active in public philosophy through keynote addresses on anti-racism and antisemitism in academia.
