Dr Kaiwen Jiang is a Lecturer in Engineering at Brunel University of London, working within the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering in the College of Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences. She joined the university in September 2024 after completing her PhD.
Her educational qualifications include:
- BEng in Mechanical Design, Manufacture and Automation from North China University of Technology, China (2017)
- MSc in Advanced Mechanical Engineering from the University of Birmingham, UK (2018)
- PhD in Automation and Intelligent Manufacturing from the University of Birmingham, UK (2024)
Dr Jiang's research centers on remanufacturing engineering with specialization in robotic disassembly systems and intelligent optimisation using metaheuristic algorithms. Key focus areas include:
- Robotic Disassembly: Developing platforms and methodologies for disassembling complex products like electric vehicle batteries and screw-based components using collaborative robots.
- Bees Algorithm Applications: Enhancing combinatorial optimisation for problems including vehicle routing, bin packing, and travelling salesman scenarios through parameter tuning and algorithmic improvements.
- Sustainable Manufacturing: Integrating CAD simulation with remanufacturing processes to maximize product value retention and circular economy principles.
Her publication record (2020-2024) demonstrates a clear trajectory from foundational algorithm development to practical industrial applications, particularly in automotive remanufacturing. The work consistently bridges theoretical optimisation with real-world robotic implementation challenges.
Dr Jiang supervises student projects including the Major Individual Project module and teaches core mechanical engineering courses. She actively contributes to academic committees including the International Workshop Series on the Bees Algorithm and Its Applications (BAA), the International Workshop on Autonomous Remanufacturing (IWAR), and the British Standard Institution's Reman committee (BSI-TPR1/7/3).
