Kai Zhang

Kai Zhang is a full Professor of Wood Technology and Wood Chemistry at the University of Göttingen, Germany. He is affiliated with the Faculty of Chemistry and serves as Executive Director of the Biotechnikum (Biotechnology Center) under the Faculty for Forest Sciences and Forest Ecology. Since 2024, he has been a member of the Wöhler Research Institute of Sustainable Chemistry. His career includes roles as Adjunct Professor at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (2016–2021) and Junior-Professor (Tenure-Track) at Göttingen (2015–2019). Zhang holds a PhD (summa cum laude) in Chemistry from Dresden University of Technology (2011), a Diplom in Food Chemistry (2007), and a Bachelor in Food Science and Engineering from Hefei University of Technology (2002).

His research focuses on sustainable materials science, particularly nanocellulose-based composites, bio-based polymers, hydrogels, and energy conversion technologies. Key interests span structural colors in materials, photothermal systems, and functional biomaterials for biomedical and environmental applications. He leads initiatives in advanced materials design, including aerogels, carbon composites, and smart interfaces.

Zhang’s editorial roles include Editorial Board positions for Supramolecular Materials (since 2024), Smart Materials in Medicine (since 2020), and Scientific Reports (since 2016). His work emphasizes interdisciplinary innovation, bridging chemistry, materials science, and sustainability. Current projects include the REACT-EU/NEuM initiative and collaborations within the GLCC 2025 framework, advancing biotechnology and eco-friendly materials.

His research outputs span over 100 peer-reviewed articles, with a focus on cutting-edge materials for energy, health, and environmental sustainability. Notable contributions include scalable nanocellulose fabrication, photothermal-responsive polymers, and advanced carbon-based composites derived from biomass.
