Kai Uhlig

Dr. Kai Uhlig serves as Head of the Research Group Materials Characterization at the Leibniz Institute for Polymer Research Dresden (IPF), where he leads advanced research in polymer materials science and engineering.

His research focuses on:

• Development of material models for fiber-reinforced plastics using Tailored Fiber Placement technology
• Structural mechanical design of FRP with variable-axial fiber orientation
• Experimental characterization of mechanical behavior in polymer materials
• Numerical simulation of deformation and damage behavior in FRP components
• Production processes for structurally highly stressed FRP components

Dr. Uhlig currently leads the SAB Research Project 'NGSCOPES - A new generation of actuators for endoscopy' and has previously contributed to significant projects including 'Carbonstickgrund,' 'HotFlex,' 'highSTICKplus,' and multiple ZIM initiatives focused on lightweight construction principles and specialized engineering applications.

His work bridges theoretical modeling with practical industrial applications across aerospace, automotive, and medical device manufacturing sectors, developing innovative solutions for optimizing material properties in engineered components.
