Kai Kokko is a Professor of Environmental Law at the Faculty of Law, University of Helsinki, holding the title of Docent and affiliated with the Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science (HELSUS). He serves as Supervisor for the Doctoral Programme in Law and maintains an active research profile with numerous publications and projects addressing critical environmental legal issues.
His research focuses on European and national environmental law, with specialization in forest law, mining regulation, climate change adaptation, and environmental liability frameworks. Kokko's work examines how legal systems can balance ecological protection with economic development, particularly in areas like sustainable resource management and corporate environmental responsibility during financial distress. His scholarship connects theoretical legal analysis with practical policy implementation across multiple environmental sectors.
Recent publications reveal a consistent pattern of addressing contemporary environmental governance challenges, particularly environmental liability during corporate bankruptcy, sustainable mining practices, and the legal dimensions of forest conservation. His research demonstrates how legal frameworks can evolve to address climate change impacts while considering economic realities and social equity concerns.
- Diploma from Russian Federation Economic Development Ministry for 'Most sustainable cooperation' (2016)
- Candidate for the 2018 Tiedekynä award
Professor Kokko actively supervises doctoral students and has led significant research projects including JUVAKOVE on environmental liability during bankruptcy (funded by the Office of the Prime Minister), Bio-CCU Kokko on carbon regulation (funded by Business Finland), and studies on the carbon border adjustment mechanism's economic impact. His work bridges academic scholarship with practical policy development through expert statements to parliamentary committees and extensive media engagement.
Through HELSUS and various research networks, Kokko collaborates with interdisciplinary teams addressing sustainability challenges. His ongoing projects through 2025, including NS Finlandia - Co-Creation, demonstrate continued leadership in shaping environmental legal frameworks that respond to evolving ecological and economic conditions.
