Kai Heidemann

Kai Heidemann is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Science and Engineering, University College Maastricht, and an affiliated researcher at Université de Liège (since 2021) and a former visiting researcher at Universidad de San Andres (2015–2020). Their work focuses on sociology, political sociology, and social movements with a regional emphasis on France, Belgium, the Basque Country, Argentina, and the United States.

Research interests include civic engagement, community-based education, qualitative methodology, and extended case study methods. Notable publications explore themes like crisis responses in Europe, pedagogical solidarity in Francophone Belgium, and decentralization in global education systems. Heidemann has presented at conferences including the 2024 European Democracies in Crisis event and the 2016 American Educational Research Association (AERA) meeting.

They currently accept PhD students and have organized initiatives like the European Democracies in Crisis: Voices, Actions and Reactions From Below project. Their work bridges sociological theory with practical educational frameworks, emphasizing participatory and community-driven approaches.
