Kagan Tumer is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering at Oregon State University (OSU), leading the Collaborative Robotics and Intelligent Systems (CoRIS) Institute. He holds a PhD from The University of Texas at Austin (1996) and has been at OSU since 2006, previously working at NASA Ames Research Center (1997–2006). His research focuses on multiagent systems, distributed intelligence, and robotics, with applications in air traffic management, autonomous robotics, and energy systems. Tumer’s work emphasizes learning and coordination in complex systems, including multi-robot teams, sensor networks, and wave energy optimization.
Research interests include multiagent reinforcement learning, evolutionary algorithms, and distributed decision-making. He directs the Autonomous Agents and Distributed Intelligence (AADI) Lab, which explores topics like multi-robot coordination and adaptive learning frameworks. Notable achievements include the 2017 OSU Excellence in Post-doctoral Mentoring Award and multiple paper awards at conferences like GECCO and AAMAS.
Tumer’s recent work addresses challenges such as drone traffic management, entropy-based coordination, and robust teamwork in multiagent systems. His lab collaborates on projects like the CoRIS Institute, advancing robotics and AI through interdisciplinary approaches. He emphasizes student-driven research, fostering a collaborative environment that bridges academia and practical applications.
