Professor Kubo's research interests focus on the intricate dynamics of multi-ethnic societies undergoing political transition, with particular emphasis on the Balkans region. His work examines how electoral systems, institutional design, and transitional justice mechanisms affect democratic consolidation in post-conflict societies. He has developed innovative methodologies combining quantitative text analysis with survey research to understand public perceptions of statehood and political legitimacy in deeply divided societies.
His recent scholarly output demonstrates a clear progression from studying specific cases in the former Yugoslavia toward developing broader theoretical frameworks applicable to global conflict resolution. The publications reveal a consistent focus on statehood perceptions, ethnic power-sharing arrangements, and the role of international actors in post-conflict settings, with increasing methodological sophistication incorporating large-N analyses and comparative case studies.

He regularly advises graduate students on their theses and has developed innovative courses on comparative politics and democratization. His research team collaborates extensively with scholars across Europe, particularly in the Balkans region, conducting joint fieldwork and organizing international conferences.
As principal investigator of the "Interdisciplinary Research on the Scope of Protection and Prohibition in the International Society" project, Professor Kubo leads a multinational research team conducting survey research in conflict-affected regions including Bosnia, Syria, and Iraq. His work has established important connections between Waseda University and research institutions in Southeast Europe, facilitating academic exchange and collaborative fieldwork in challenging environments.
