Assoc. Prof. Kerem Terali is the Head of the Medical Biochemistry Department at Girne American University's Faculty of Medicine. His research focuses on anti-COVID-19 drug development, particularly targeting proteins like ACE2 and viral enzymes. His work utilizes computational methods for drug repositioning, as demonstrated in a 2020 study published in the Journal of Molecular Graphics and Modeling, which identified potential drugs to inhibit SARS-CoV-2. This research was recognized as the most cited original work from Northern Cyprus.
He emphasizes the need for both vaccines and therapeutic drugs to combat the pandemic, advocating for accelerated testing of promising candidates through cell culture and animal studies. Additionally, he underscores the importance of continued adherence to public health measures like masking and hygiene to curb virus transmission and variant emergence.
