KC Huang is a Professor of Bioengineering and Microbiology & Immunology at Stanford University, affiliated with the School of Engineering. His research focuses on bacterial cell shape, including mechanisms of cell-wall biosynthesis, cell division mechanics, membrane organization, and antibiotic tolerance. Huang holds memberships in Bio-X, the Wu Tsai Human Performance Alliance, and Sarafan ChEM-H. He received a Ph.D. in Physics from MIT (2004), an M. Phil from Cambridge University (1999), and a B.S. from Caltech (1998).
Research interests include understanding how proteins and membranes self-organize in response to cellular morphology. Current projects explore cell-wall dynamics, cytoskeletal regulation, and microbial community interactions. Notable achievements include developing the Bellymount imaging technique for longitudinal studies of Drosophila microbiota and elucidating pH-mediated antibiotic tolerance mechanisms in bacterial communities.
Key awards include an NSF CAREER Award (2012–2017) and NIH New Innovator Award (2009–2014). His work has advanced understanding of bacterial physiology and engineering applications of cell shape manipulation.
Advising includes doctoral students like Douglas Henze and Kent Kotaka, as well as postdoctoral scholars such as Achuthan Ambat. His laboratory, the Laboratory of Cellular Organization, drives interdisciplinary research at the intersection of physics, microbiology, and engineering.
