K.J. Martijn Cremers serves as the Martin J. Gillen Dean and Bernard J. Hank Professor of Finance at the University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business. He previously held faculty roles at Yale School of Management (2002–2012). His research focuses on investment management, corporate governance, corporate finance, and Catholic social thought, with over 14,000 Google citations. Notably, he developed the Active Share metric, widely used in evaluating mutual fund management.
Education: PhD from NYU Stern School of Business and MS from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He has held editorial roles at journals such as Review of Financial Studies and Review of Finance.
Research interests include: corporate governance mechanisms, mutual/pension fund performance, executive compensation, and the intersection of law and finance. His work bridges theoretical finance with practical implications for institutional investors and corporate policy.
Recent publications explore dual-class firm valuation, ESG engagement, and short-term vs. long-term investor dynamics. Awards include the 2014 SPIVA Research Award and recognition from the University of Delaware’s corporate governance center.
