Dr. K.J. Hickerson is an Assistant Instructional Professor in the Department of History at the University of Chicago, specializing in the cultural and political history of the 19th and early 20th century Nile Valley. Her research focuses on African history, the African diaspora in the Middle East, and imperialism. She holds a PhD in History from the University of Pennsylvania (2017) and an AM in Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African Studies from Columbia University (2009).
Her research interests include the history of death in Sudan under Ottoman-Egyptian colonialism, the Mahdiyya period, and Anglo-Egyptian co-dominion. She has published in journals such as Journal of Northeast African Studies and Sudan Studies Bulletin, and contributed to the Encyclopaedia of Islam. Her book manuscript, Mortal Struggles: Death and Empire in the Nile Valley, examines death-related cultural practices during colonial transitions.
Dr. Hickerson has held fellowships at Durham University, the Huntington Library, and the British Academy, among others. Her work integrates visual and material culture, including photography, art, fashion, and medicine to explore political and social dynamics in the Nile Valley.
