Professor Jürgen Gerhards is a Senior Professor of Sociology at the Institute of Sociology within the Department of Politics and Social Sciences at Freie Universität Berlin. He has been affiliated with the university since October 2004 and previously served as Professor of Sociology at the University of Leipzig from 1994 to 2004. Gerhards is also a Research Fellow at the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW) since 2006, a full member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences since 2007, and an elected member of the German National Academy of Sciences 'Leopoldina' since 2018. His distinguished academic career includes fellowships at prestigious institutions including Wissenschaftskolleg in Berlin, the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study, and the WZB.
Born in 1955 in Andernach/Rhine, Gerhards studied social sciences (sociology, political science, economics) and German at the University of Cologne. He received his doctorate in 1986 from the University of Cologne and completed his habilitation in 1992 at Freie Universität Berlin. His early career included positions as a research assistant at the Research Institute for Sociology at the University of Cologne (1982-1988) and as a research associate at the Berlin Social Science Center (1988-1994).
Gerhards' research spans several interconnected fields with a primary focus on European integration, migration studies, and cultural sociology. His work examines how cultural differences impact European integration processes, the dynamics of transnational human capital and social inequality, and the sociology of symbolic boundaries. Recent work has increasingly focused on refugee studies, analyzing the distinction between refugees and immigrants, border politics, and the 'liberal border script' that frames migration debates. His research on naming practices as indicators of cultural integration and distinction strategies has provided unique insights into migration and social stratification processes. Gerhards approaches these topics through comparative, often multi-country research designs that reveal patterns across national contexts.
His recent publications demonstrate a clear progression toward increasingly policy-relevant research on migration and European integration. The 15 most recent articles reveal a sustained focus on the tension between liberal democratic principles and border controls, with particular attention to how citizens in different countries perceive and justify migration policies. His work combines theoretical innovation (particularly around 'scripts' that frame political discourse) with rigorous empirical analysis of public opinion and policy debates across multiple nations.

Gerhards has led numerous research projects funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), including major collaborative projects on refugee debates across six countries, European solidarity in times of crisis, and the cultural dimensions of European integration. His 'SCRIPTS' project on 'Contestations of the Liberal Script' represents a significant contribution to understanding contemporary challenges to liberal democratic norms. He has supervised numerous doctoral students and collaborated with researchers across Europe and beyond, establishing himself as a central figure in European sociological research networks. His work demonstrates how theoretical frameworks can be systematically tested against comparative empirical data to advance our understanding of complex social phenomena.
Gerhards leads research teams examining European integration processes, migration dynamics, and cultural sociology. His current projects involve interdisciplinary collaborations with political scientists, linguists, and migration scholars, often working within the framework of the 'SCRIPTS' excellence cluster at Freie Universität Berlin. These teams employ mixed-method approaches combining quantitative survey data with qualitative analysis of public debates and policy documents to produce comprehensive analyses of contemporary social challenges.
