Prof. Dr. Jürgen Geist holds the Chair of Aquatic Systems Biology at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), within the TUM School of Life Sciences. His academic journey includes a PhD in Genetics and Ecology (2005) from TUM, a postdoc at UC Davis, and habilitation in Aquatic Ecology (2010). He has been a full professor since 2010.
Research focuses on integrating molecular and ecological approaches to study aquatic biodiversity, including habitat quality, fish/mussel genetics, food webs, and stress biomarkers. Notable contributions include work on freshwater pearl mussels and invasive species management.
- Education:
- B.Sc./M.Sc. in Agricultural Biology, TUM
- PhD in Genetics/Ecology (2005), TUM
- Postdoc, University of California, Davis (2005–2008)
- Habilitation in Aquatic Ecology (2010), TUM
Awards:
- Bavarian State Medal for Environmental Services (2020)
- TUM Excellence in Teaching Award (2011/2012)
- Förderkolleg of Bavarian Academy of Sciences (2010)
- Young Scientist Award, German Limnological Society (2005)
His work bridges lab-based genetics with field ecology, addressing critical issues like climate change impacts on aquatic species and hydropower plant effects on fish migration. Active in conservation initiatives such as the ArKoNaVera project for freshwater pearl mussels in Bavaria/Saxony.
