Prof. Dr. Jürgen Brokoff is a Professor of Modern German Literature at the Free University of Berlin, affiliated with the Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities and the Institute of German and Dutch Philology. He joined the university in 2013 and specializes in literary aesthetics, historical poetics, and cultural communication. His research spans Weimar Classicism, 20th-century war literature, political theology, and contemporary German literature post-1989.
Brokoff's research explores the intersection of literature with public discourse, examining themes like war crimes, antisemitism, and rumor communication. He investigates literary authorship, scandal dynamics in unified Germany, and the role of emotion in cultural narratives, with a focus on writers such as Thomas Mann, Stefan George, and Paul Celan.
He directs doctoral candidates through regular colloquia and leads research teams in major interdisciplinary projects:
