Prof. Dr. Jörn Walter serves as Professor in the Department of Genetics and Epigenetics at Saarland University, leading Project A05 within the Collaborative Research Center SFB 1309 focused on nucleic acid modifications.
His research investigates Tet-mediated oxidative modifications of 5-methylcytosine (5mC) and their role in epigenetic memory using mouse embryonic stem cells and primary human cells. The laboratory develops multimodal next-generation sequencing (NGS) approaches for simultaneous detection of DNA modifications (5mC, 5hmC, 5fC) and open chromatin states. Current work employs genetically engineered mouse models with Tet3 isoform mutations to analyze epigenetic program dynamics during early mammalian development and in neuronal lineages, combining molecular techniques with integrative analyses of transcriptional control mechanisms.
Walter's research group operates within SFB 1309, an interdisciplinary consortium examining nucleic acid/protein modifications and associated analytical tools funded by the German Research Foundation.
