Prof. Dr. Jörn Sickmann is a Professor of Economics with a focus on industrial economics and corporate finance at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, where he has been teaching since 2011. He is affiliated with the Faculty of Society and Economics and contributes significantly to research in network industries and digital transformation.
His primary research interests include industrial and regulatory economics in network industries, with particular emphasis on telecommunications, digitalization, artificial intelligence, and the digital transformation of transport networks. Additional areas of expertise encompass behavioral and experimental research on financial and network economics, technology acceptance, and digital consumer protection. His work frequently involves expert opinions for major German institutions including the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, the Federal Network Agency, and the Consumer Association of Germany.
Prof. Sickmann's recent publication record demonstrates a strong trend toward understanding human interaction with AI and algorithmic systems, particularly in transportation contexts. His research examines trust in algorithms, consumer perceptions of AI, and psychological factors influencing technology adoption, with many studies employing experimental methods to understand decision-making processes in digital environments.
His current research projects include:
- KIE: Artificial Intelligence and Algorithmic Decision Systems: An Empirical and Behavioral Economic Analysis of New Opportunities and Barriers to Digital Consumer Participation (2021-2023, funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment)
- CONUS: Competence Net urban-industrial Supply (2020-2023, funded by European Regional Development Fund)
- Promuove: Incentive and information structures in multimodal transport concepts (2014-2017)
- Analysis of rounding procedures in the Klever City Network (2016-2017)
Before his academic career, Prof. Sickmann worked at Deutsche Telekom AG headquarters and participated in international committees including the OECD's Business and Industry Advisory Committee and the International Chamber of Commerce in Paris. He studied economics at Humboldt University of Berlin, Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg, and the University of Basel, and completed his doctoral work at the Technical University of Ilmenau.
