Professor Dr. Jörn Block is a Full Professor of Corporate Management at the Department of Business Administration, Faculty IV, Trier University, Germany. He also serves as Head of the Steinbeis-Transferzentrum Technologie- und IP-Management and has held guest professorships at Jönköping International Business School and Universität Witten/Herdecke. His academic leadership includes roles as (Vice-)Division Chair of the Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship (TIE) Division at the German Academic Association for Business Research (VHB) and former President of the FGF-Forschungsnetzwerk Entrepreneurship, Innovation und Mittelstand.
His research focuses on innovation and technology management, sustainability, decarbonisation, entrepreneurship, family firms, hidden champions, and corporate governance. He investigates these topics using both qualitative and quantitative methods, often at the intersection of management and economics. His work frequently analyzes intellectual property data, especially patents and trademarks, as indicators of innovation and sustainability.
His recent publications reveal strong trends in green innovation, decarbonization strategies in medium-sized firms, the role of intellectual property in sustainability reporting, and the dynamics of family and hidden champion firms. He actively publishes in top journals such as Research Policy, Strategic Management Journal, and Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, often employing meta-analyses, large-scale surveys, and empirical data from Europe and Japan.

Professor Block advises numerous PhD and Master’s students and leads an active research lab at Trier University. His collaborative network spans Europe, with frequent co-authorship on projects related to entrepreneurial finance, venture capital, and family business. He has been involved in significant research on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on self-employed individuals and the role of financial aid.
His research is supported by extensive data collection efforts, including large surveys of private debt funds, venture capital investors, and family firms. He is also engaged in methodological work, particularly in meta-analytic structural equation modeling (MASEM) and systematic literature reviews.
