Jörgen Sparf serves as Associate Professor of Sociology at Mid Sweden University's Department of Humanities and Social Sciences and is a founding member of the Risk and Crisis Research Centre (RCR). He represents Sweden in the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction's European Science and Technology Advisory Group (UNDRR E-STAG) and participates in the Global Alliance of Disaster Research Institutes (GADRI).
His research spans relational sociology, organization theory, social networks, and disaster resilience frameworks. Empirical work focuses on crisis management systems, social network analysis in emergencies, and vulnerability-capacity dynamics. Current projects include LEGITIPREP (Swedish Research Council, 6M SEK), FUTURESILIENCE (Horizon Europe, 2.9M €), and FOUNTAIN (Erasmus+, 800K €).
As project manager for the EU-funded RCR Simulation Lab (2017-2022), he pioneered immersive crisis training environments. Since 2022, he maintains a part-time senior researcher role at NTNU Social Research AS in Norway while continuing full-time duties at Mid Sweden University.
Dr. Sparf supervises three doctoral candidates (Kolmodin, Grännsjö, van den Akker) and has guided two to completion (Becker, Hemmingsson). His administrative leadership includes 15 years as Programme Director/Director of Studies and founding both the undergraduate Risk and Crisis Management program and Master's in Sociology: Risk, Resilience, Working Life.
Holding a PhD and MA in Sociology plus a Master of Fine Arts and Education from Lund University, his teaching spans sociological theory, social network analysis, and crisis management across all academic levels. Current research emphasizes policy entrepreneurship, multi-organizational crisis collaboration, and experimental design in crisis pedagogy.
