Professor Jörg Schilcher is a prominent orthopedic researcher at Linköping University's Faculty of Medicine, Department of Surgery, Orthopaedics and Oncology. He serves as a senior physician at the Orthopaedic Clinic, Linköping University Hospital, and leads the Pragmatic Research in Orthopaedics (PRIO) group, which focuses on optimizing quality of care in orthopedic surgery with special emphasis on lower extremities.
His research primarily investigates bone healing disorders, with three main focus areas: atypical femur fractures related to bisphosphonate treatment for osteoporosis, hip and knee joint replacement longevity, and acute compartment syndrome diagnosis and treatment. Schilcher's team was the first to prove the connection between bisphosphonates and unusual femur fractures under former professor Per Aspenberg's leadership.
His research has significant clinical implications, particularly in understanding why joint prostheses loosen in some patients but not others, and how medications like bisphosphonates affect implant survival. The research helps optimize treatment protocols to avoid complications and improve patient outcomes.
- Research funding from Swedish Research Council (VR) - 67 million SEK
- NIH international collaboration grant with University of California - approximately 7.5 million SEK for Linköping portion
Professor Schilcher actively supervises multiple doctoral students including Hans Peter Bögl, Georg Zdolsek, Håkan Ledin, Jonathan Brandt, Rico Perlbach, and Abraham Nilsson. His research group PRIO has established international collaborations, including a significant project with the University of California studying the relationship between long-term bisphosphonate use and atypical femur fractures. Recently, he represented Linköping University at a royal anniversary lunch with Queen Silvia, highlighting the societal recognition of his contributions to medical research.
