Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jörg Röder serves as Professor for Building Conservation, Existing Structures and Timber Construction at the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam's Department of Civil Engineering since September 2018. He also acts as Head of the Structural Engineering Laboratory (BKI) since April 2021 and serves as Study Advisor for the Ing•Bau – Building Preservation and New Construction in Civil and Structural Engineering (M.Sc.) program. Additionally, he holds positions as Member of the Departmental Council and Senate Chairman within the Department of Civil Engineering.
His educational background includes:
- Diploma in Civil Engineering from TU Berlin (1997)
- Doctorate in Engineering from TU Berlin (2006)
Prof. Röder's research focuses on the critical intersection of building conservation and modern structural engineering. His work addresses the challenges of preserving existing structures while ensuring structural safety and adapting to changing environmental conditions. His expertise spans structural health monitoring of historic buildings, concrete repair techniques for aging infrastructure, and the application of modern materials in building preservation. He has made significant contributions to understanding alkali-silica reaction in concrete structures, corrosion monitoring in long-span hall structures, and the adaptation of building systems to climate change impacts. His research bridges theoretical knowledge with practical applications in building conservation.
Analysis of his publication record reveals consistent focus on structural assessment methodologies, particularly for aging infrastructure. His work shows progression from fundamental material science research (particularly thermal insulation systems in the 2000s) toward more complex structural monitoring and preservation techniques in recent years. The publications demonstrate strong specialization in long-span hall structures, concrete deterioration mechanisms, and practical methodologies for assessing and repairing damaged structures.
Prof. Röder serves as Study Advisor for the Ing•Bau Master's program in Building Preservation and New Construction. His research activities include the ERDF-funded InfraFEI 2021 project focused on developing measurement equipment for recording mechanical and climatic parameters in building structures, which supports multiple research initiatives including structural health monitoring, reinforcement of structures (particularly masonry), and innovative composite structures in timber and steel construction.
As Head of the Structural Engineering Laboratory, Prof. Röder leads research in building preservation and experimental structural analysis. His laboratory has expanded capabilities through the InfraFEI 2021 project, enabling advanced monitoring of building responses using Fiber Bragg technology for deformation monitoring of inhomogeneous historical structures. The laboratory maintains collaborations with the Brandenburg University of Technology in sensor technology and digital measurement monitoring, enhancing its research capacity in structural health monitoring of infrastructure.
