PD Dr. Jörg Becker is a Research Associate at the Chair of Ancient Near Eastern Studies within the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Würzburg. His career spans decades of fieldwork and research across Turkey, Syria, Mesopotamia, and Iran, focusing on prehistoric cultures and periods such as the Late Bronze Age and Iron Age.
- Key Projects: DFG-funded excavations at Boğazköy-Hattuša (Turkey), Göbekli Tepe (2014), Tell Halaf (Syria), and Arisman (Iran).
- Education: Studied Near Eastern Archaeology, Assyriology, and Prehistory at the University of Frankfurt am Main and Freie Universität Berlin (1984–1996).
His research explores urban development, cultural identities, and cross-regional interactions in the Ancient Near East, with a particular emphasis on archaeological fieldwork and analysis of sites like Büyükkale, Nevalı Çori, and Tell Tawila. He has held research positions at institutions including the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and the German Archaeological Institute (Berlin).
