Professor Jörg B. Quenzer holds a professorship in Japanese Literature with a focus on intellectual and cultural history at the University of Hamburg. His research spans medieval Japanese literature, manuscript cultures, and the intersection of Buddhism with literary traditions. He directs projects on ritual aesthetics in collaborative poetry and the valuation of handwriting in the digital age.
Research interests include Japanese literary history, manuscript studies, and cultural transmission. His work frequently examines medieval texts through interdisciplinary lenses connecting religious, aesthetic, and performative dimensions.
Professor Quenzer maintains extensive academic collaborations across Europe and Japan, including visiting research positions at Nichibunken (Kyoto). He serves in leadership roles for several manuscript research initiatives and has organized international conferences on intercultural hermeneutics.
His educational background includes promotion (1998) and habilitation (2006) from Universität zu Köln, with research stays at Keiô University and Ôsaka City University.
