Jérôme Leriche

Jérôme Leriche is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports at the University of Sherbrooke, where he has been employed since 2015. His academic career began at Collège de Sherbrooke as a Teacher-Researcher in 2009, and he has taught various courses in physical education, sports pedagogy, and physical activity at both the college and university levels.

Dr. Leriche earned his Doctorate in Education from the University of Sherbrooke in 2010 with a dissertation titled 'Analyse des pratiques d'accompagnement des stagiaires au Québec et en France en éducation physique' (Analysis of internship supervision practices in physical education in Quebec and France). He also holds an Advanced English Certificate from the University of Sherbrooke (2016).

Dr. Leriche's research focuses on understanding obstacles, motivation, and enjoyment in physical activity practice in school settings; examining health and lifestyle habits in both school and professional environments; developing effective teacher training methods; enhancing professional teaching skills; and exploring emerging pedagogical models. His recent work particularly addresses how physical education can contribute to mental health challenges among student populations and improving physical activity levels on university campuses.

His recent publications (2021-2025) demonstrate a strong focus on longitudinal studies of physical activity behaviors, screen time impacts on children's physical activity, mental health in college settings, and innovative teaching approaches like mountain biking instruction. His research employs mixed methods combining quantitative measurements with qualitative insights, with a recurring theme of how pedagogical approaches can address motivational barriers and promote lifelong physical activity habits.

Dr. Leriche has received numerous awards including the Programme d'aide à la diffusion des résultats de recherche au collégial grant (2018) and multiple excellence scholarships for master's and doctoral studies from the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports.

As a researcher, Dr. Leriche has secured significant funding for projects addressing physical activity among police officers, implementation of school information systems, firefighter recruitment testing, and electronic sports in school contexts. He serves as principal investigator on multiple projects and as co-investigator on large-scale collaborative initiatives including the PÉRISCOPE network on school perseverance and success. His international collaborations include work with the University of Toulouse on didactic joint action theory and with New Zealand researchers on the 'sport education' model.
