Dr. Jyoti Nangalia is a distinguished Group Leader in the Cancer, Ageing and Somatic Mutation Programme at the Wellcome Sanger Institute and a Principal Investigator at the Wellcome-MRC Cambridge Stem Cell Institute. She also serves as an Honorary Consultant Haematologist at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, where she treats patients with chronic myeloid malignancies.
Dr. Nangalia received her medical education at the University of Cambridge (St John's College), earning a BA with First Class Honors followed by an MB BChir medical degree. She completed her PhD at the University of Cambridge and Sanger Institute, where she discovered CALR mutations in myeloproliferative neoplasms.
Her research focuses on understanding somatic mutation patterns, methylation changes, and clonal selection throughout life and how these processes alter during ageing and cancer development. Her group employs innovative approaches including single-cell derived whole genome sequencing, phylogenetic analysis, mathematical modeling, and population simulations to study clonal trajectories to blood cancers and methylation dynamics across tissues and lifespan. Her earlier groundbreaking work identified CALR mutations in patients with JAK2-unmutated myeloproliferative neoplasms, which is now routinely tested in clinical practice and included in international WHO guidelines.
Analysis of Dr. Nangalia's recent publications reveals a strong focus on clonal dynamics in hematopoiesis across the human lifespan, with particular emphasis on blood cancer trajectories, methylation changes during ageing, and the development of personalized cancer prediction models. Her work integrates large-scale genomic data with clinical parameters to improve early detection and intervention strategies for blood cancers.
- Johnstone & Florence Stoney Scholarship from the British Federation of Women Graduates
- Cancer Research UK Clinician Scientist Fellow (2017)
- Cancer Research UK Advanced Clinician Scientist Fellow
Dr. Nangalia leads the Nangalia Group at the Sanger Institute, which includes staff scientists, postdoctoral fellows, and PhD students. Her research is supported by Cancer Research UK and other major funding bodies. She is actively involved in clinical research, leading molecular analysis for clinical trials of myeloproliferative neoplasms and contributing to national guidelines for these conditions. Her group has developed predictive tools for blood cancer prognosis that integrate clinical and genomic parameters.
The Nangalia Group maintains strong collaborations with clinical teams at Cambridge University Hospitals and participates in international research networks focused on blood cancers and clonal evolution. Their work bridges basic science and clinical application, with the goal of translating genomic discoveries into improved patient outcomes.
