Jyoti Mistry is a Professor of Film at the University of Gothenburg’s HDK-Valand Faculty of Fine Arts, specializing in film as both research and artistic practice. Her work spans critically acclaimed films across genres, installations recontextualizing cinematic traditions for galleries, and decolonial pedagogical frameworks. She holds a PhD in Cinema Studies from NYU, alongside advanced degrees in Comparative Literature and Cinema Studies.
Her research focuses on decolonial methodologies in film, postcolonial identity, and archival reimagining. Notable projects include the BRICS cross-cultural image-making initiative and residencies at institutions like the Whitney Museum and Babelsberg Film University. She has been honored with the Cilect Teaching Award (2016) for innovative film pedagogy.
Mistry supervises PhD candidates at HDK-Valand and the University of Witwatersrand, while actively contributing to global film education through conferences and collaborative research. Recent work includes a 2020 residency at Västerbottens Museum exploring Sámi cultural narratives.
