Professor Jutta Arens serves as Chair of Engineering Organ Support Technologies at the University of Twente within the Faculty of Engineering Technology and Department of Biomechanical Engineering. She is affiliated with the TechMed Centre and leads interdisciplinary research bridging engineering and medicine to develop life-saving organ support systems.
Her research centers on artificial lung development for critical respiratory conditions, focusing on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), oxygenator design, in vitro gas exchange, and blood-compatible artificial organs. She addresses engineering challenges in pulmonary gas exchange systems while prioritizing patient safety through international standardization efforts. Her work integrates biomedical engineering principles with clinical requirements to advance implantable lung technologies.
Prof. Arens holds influential positions including Scientific Advisory Board member at Germany's Federal Institute of Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM), editorial board membership for "Perfusion" and "Transplant International" journals, and active roles in ISO/TC 150/SC 2/WG 4 (Extracorporeal Circuits) and NEN Standards Committee NC 301060. She chairs the Innovation Committee for the European Association of Cardiothoracic Surgeons (EACTS) and serves on EuroELSO's Scientific Committee, shaping global standards for medical devices and organ support technologies.
