Justus Meyer

Justus Meyer is a Professor at the University of Leipzig's Faculty of Law, where he has been teaching and researching since 2007. He serves as Dean of Studies and leads the Professorship for Civil Law, Commercial and Economic Law, European Private Law and Comparative Law.

His educational background includes:

• Law studies in Bielefeld and Münster (1982-1987), earning his First State Examination
• Economics studies in Münster (1983-1985), earning his Vordiplom
• Legal clerkship (1987-1990)
• Doctorate and habilitation under Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Oehler at Bielefeld University

Professor Meyer's research focuses on contract and liability law, commercial law, limited liability company law (GmbH), unfair competition law, and the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods. His research is characterized by incorporating legal fact research as well as economic, historical, and comparative legal perspectives. He has a particular interest in product liability law, having discussed current developments with practitioners up to the present day. His work in commercial law includes textbooks and contributions to European commercial law. In competition law, he focuses particularly on unfair competition law, which led to his co-editorship of a handbook on industrial property rights.

Professor Meyer has been actively involved with the DAAD and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation for many years, serving as an expert for companies and public bodies such as ministries and courts. He maintains strong connections with legal practitioners through his work as an arbitrator and through practitioner training activities.

He teaches a variety of courses including Civil Law, Commercial and Corporate Law, Unfair Competition Law, UN Sales Law, Comparative Law, and Legal History. He places special emphasis on interdisciplinary perspectives, connections between different legal areas, and embedding legal issues in historical and comparative contexts. He also organizes SQ workshops on legal presentations ("Legal Speaking" series) and various seminars including moot courts and international seminars with the University of Ljubljana.
