Justine K. Wiesinger, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Japanese at Bates College. She earned her PhD in East Asian Languages and Literatures from Yale University in 2018. Her research focuses on intersections between disaster and performance in Japanese history, particularly the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 and the 2011 earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear accident (3.11). Her book project, Performing Disaster, analyzes theater and film emerging from these events.
Research interests include Japanese horror film, contemporary theater, disaster narratives, and cultural responses to trauma. She employs task-based language pedagogy emphasizing authentic materials and student participation.
Awards include the Carol Fisher Sorgenfrei Prize and Fulbright Scholarship. She has presented globally at major conferences including AAS, AJLS, and ATHE.
