Justine Allen is a Professor at Northumbria University, specializing in the psychosocial aspects of sport and education. She joined Northumbria in 2023 after working at the University of Stirling, University of Otago, and University of Waikato. Her research focuses on coaches' practices in sport and education contexts, particularly how they influence motivation, well-being, and life skill development. She also serves as a coach developer in community sports.
Education: PhD in Sports Science (2001), MA in Sports Studies (1996), BSc in Physiology and Sports Science (1992). Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Authority (2022).
Research Interests:
- Coaching climate and athlete motivation
- Psychosocial development in youth sport
- Life skills in education and sport
Advisory Work: Supervises PhD students in areas like women golfers' coaching practices, coach development frameworks, and athlete well-being in professional football. Active in supervising studies on parental burnout in youth sports.
Publications: Over 50 articles on coaching development, athlete well-being, and sport psychology. Recent works include systematic reviews on coach developers and studies on autonomy-supportive coaching behaviors.
