Dr. Justina Mattos is an Associate Professor of Drama and Chair of the Performing Arts Department at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo. She holds a B.A. from UH Hilo, an M.A. from the University of Oregon, and a Ph.D. from UH Mānoa, specializing in Theatre History and Criticism. Her research focuses on Hawaiian theatre, Hawaiʻi Creole English (HCE), playwriting, and theatre for young audiences.
Dr. Mattos teaches courses in Acting, Directing, Playwriting, and Drama in Education. She has directed over 30 productions, including the Hawaiian language musical Moʻo Huelo and the bilingual ʻEkolu. Her work integrates Indigenous languages and cultural themes, emphasizing community collaboration and educational outreach. Recent projects include the digital storytelling series Wailau and pandemic-era online productions like Scary Scenarios.
Her scholarly contributions include articles on Pacific Islander drama, theatre history, and cultural preservation. Notable publications include After Dawn (novel, 2014) and critical essays on Edward Sakamoto’s plays. She has also written for media and educational platforms, including audio tours for the ʻImiloa Astronomy Center.
Dr. Mattos actively engages in community initiatives through theatre festivals (KEAKA), youth programs, and collaborative projects with organizations like Kumu Kahua Theatre. Her work bridges academic research, artistic practice, and cultural revitalization in Hawaiʻi.
