Justin J. Morell is a Professor of Music at Lebanon Valley College, specializing in Music Composition, Jazz, and Guitar Performance. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Oregon, where he studied under Robert Kyr and David Crumb. His expertise spans composition for jazz and concert ensembles, drawing from jazz, classical, and popular music traditions.
Education: B.A. from UCLA, M.A. from California State University East Bay, and Ph.D. from the University of Oregon.
Research interests include composition blending jazz and classical forms, as exemplified by works like All Without Words, inspired by his non-verbal autistic son. Notable works include the Concerto for Guitar and Jazz Orchestra and the Subjects and Complements jazz ensemble album. He has been commissioned by institutions like Lebanon Valley College and the Pacific Serenades series.
Recognition includes the Society of Composers’ Jazz Composition Competition win and critical acclaim for albums like Exit Music for Intelligent Life on Earth. Collaborations with renowned artists such as John Daversa, Todd Sickafoose, and Adam Rogers underscore his interdisciplinary approach. Courses taught include Music Theory, Composition, and Jazz Orchestration.
