Justin Henthorn

Dr. Justin Henthorn is a Lecturer/Assistant Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the School of Chemistry, University College Dublin (UCD), where he also holds a prestigious Royal Society - Science Foundation Ireland University Research Fellowship. He joined UCD in April 2024 after completing extensive postdoctoral research in Germany.

Dr. Henthorn received his educational training from:

• BSc in Chemistry from Ohio University (2010)
• PhD from the California Institute of Technology

His research operates at the intersection of bioinorganic, inorganic, and materials chemistry with a strong emphasis on spectroscopy and computational analysis. Dr. Henthorn has developed significant expertise in various spectroscopic techniques including X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopies, Mössbauer spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, and computational analysis (DFT). His work has focused on areas such as multi-proton multi-electron chemistry of pi-bound Molybdenum-quinonoid complexes and the electronic structure of biological systems like nitrogenase and copper-containing proteins.

Dr. Henthorn has been recognized with several prestigious awards:

At UCD, Dr. Henthorn has established the Henthorn Research Group, which focuses on bio-inspired synthetic inorganic chemistry. His lab combines synthetic inorganic chemistry with advanced spectroscopic and computational methods to address fundamental questions in bioinorganic systems.
