Jurgis Karnavičius

Jurgis Karnavičius is a Professor at the Piano Department of the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre (LMTA), where he has taught since 1981. A renowned pianist, he specializes in solo and chamber music performance, with a repertoire spanning classical and contemporary works. He previously served as Head of the Piano Department from 2011 to 2020.

• Education: Studied under Edmundas Gedgaudas (National M.K. Čiurlionis School of Art), Jurgis Karnavičius (LMTA), and Lev Naumov (Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory).

His artistic focus includes works by Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Liszt, Brahms, and French composers. He has performed extensively with ensembles like the Čiurlionis Quartet and Gaida Ensemble at international festivals.

His touring history spans Europe, the United States, Canada, and South Korea. Two notable recordings include Vytautas Bacevičius. Poems for Piano and The Yet Undiscovered Music Cycles by M.K. Čiurlionis.

Scientific awards include:

• First Prize at All-Union M. K. Čiurlionis Piano Competition (1978)
• Laureate at multiple international piano competitions

As an educator, he has mentored over 50 piano graduates and leads masterclasses at institutions like the Paris National Conservatory and Sibelius Academy. He also serves on evaluation committees for major piano competitions.

Beyond music, he is a champion orienteer and photography enthusiast.
