Jurgen Buchenau is a Professor and Dowd Term Chair of Capitalism Studies in the Department of History at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC Charlotte). He holds a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1993). His research focuses on 19th and 20th century Mexico, particularly political economy, political violence, immigration, Mexico’s global relations, and the Mexican Revolution. He teaches courses on Latin American history, capitalism studies, and film-based history.

His major publications include Anti-Catholicism in the Mexican Revolution (2024), which received an Honorable Mention for the Alfred B. Thomas Award, and Plutarco Elías Calles and the Mexican Revolution (2006), which won the Alfred B. Thomas Award. He is currently working on a book about U.S.-Mexican relations and second editions of prior works.
