Junko Takeda is a Professor of History at Syracuse University's Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, serving as Chair of Citizenship and Civic Engagement and holding the Daicoff Faculty Scholar appointment. She earned her Ph.D. in History from Stanford University in 2006. Her research focuses on early modern citizenship, globalization, migration, disease history, and race in European empires, with a specialization in France's interactions with Asian empires. She has authored two major books: The Other Persian Letters (2020) and Between Crown and Commerce (2011). Takeda has received prestigious awards, including the 2023 Excellence in Graduate Teaching Award and the 2024 Faculty Advisor of the Year.
Her teaching spans early modern European history, global history, and Asian-American studies, with courses like HST 111 (Early Modern Europe) and HST 121 (Global History to 1750). She actively presents at academic symposia, such as the Fernand Braudel Symposium (2024) and Asian American Research Center events. Takeda’s work bridges early modern and contemporary issues, including race-craft, migration, and memoir-writing in Asian-American contexts. She has led initiatives at the Maxwell School, including directorships and centennial programs, and mentors students through graduate education and civic engagement programs.
