Juniper Lovato is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Vermont and a member of the Vermont Complex Systems Center. Her work bridges computational science, network theory, and societal impact through ethical data practices and open science initiatives.
Her research interests include complex systems, data ethics, group privacy, network science, the science of stories, and open source ecosystems. She is deeply engaged in advancing STEM education and democratizing access to technology through maker-centered learning.
She has pioneered over 80 STEM education programs worldwide and is a leader in educational outreach, serving as the inaugural Vermont regional partner with Code.org and co-founding the Vermont CSTA and Vermont Computer Science Alliance. Her efforts extend to fostering community innovation spaces, including founding Make Santa Fe.
She serves on the board of the Network Science Society and the New England Chapter of the Complex Systems Society, contributing to the governance and growth of interdisciplinary scientific communities.
Her professional journey includes serving as Director of Education at the Santa Fe Institute, where she helped shape national and international education strategies in complexity science. She earned her Ph.D. in Complex Systems & Data Science from the University of Vermont.
Juniper actively supports makerspaces and open science programs, reflecting her commitment to collaborative, inclusive, and transparent knowledge creation.
