Junhyong Kim is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Biology at the University of Pennsylvania. His research bridges mathematical and computational biology with genomics and evolutionary biology, focusing on bio-generative processes, temporal control of gene regulation, and single-cell genomics. He collaborates extensively with Jim Eberwine (Pharm) on projects involving neuroscience and cell differentiation genomics.
- Department of Biology, University of Pennsylvania
- Research areas: Genomics, Computational Biology, Evolutionary Biology, Single Cell Genomics
His work employs techniques such as discrete algorithms, simulations, statistical learning, and single-cell sequencing (scRNA-seq, scATAC-seq) to study neuronal diversity, kidney biology, cancer therapy barriers, and viral interactions. Recent publications highlight tumor-derived extracellular vesicles, mitochondrial mutational landscapes, and SARS-CoV-2 phototransfection models.
Junhyong's projects include developing computational infrastructure for Tree of Life inference (PACS, PIC) and advancing single-cell technologies like TIVA and VERSE. His lab is based at Lynch Labs, and he mentors PhD students Angela Huang and Da Kuang.
Collaborative Themes:
- Jim Eberwine's lab on cell diversity and synaptic genomics
- Multi-omics integration in kidney and neuronal systems
- Statistical methods for chromatin accessibility and RNA amplification
