Dr Jungmo Youn is an LSE Fellow in the Department of Media and Communications at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). He holds a PhD in Communication from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research focuses on the historical mediation of middle-class mentalities and the social employment of media technology in East Asian capitalist societies, with a comparative lens on China, Japan, and South Korea. He has taught cultural theories and East Asian media history in Hong Kong Baptist University-Beijing Normal University United International College for three years.
Dr Youn’s current work includes expanding his doctoral research on South Korea’s 1980s cultural formation into a book manuscript, alongside ethnographic studies on China (under the working title Formation of Capitalistic Purgatory after Deng) and Japan (Akahata and Time). Collaboratively, he is tracing East Asian bourgeois individuality through Manchurian spatial experiences of the 1930s in a project titled Sorghum, Bandit and Nozomi.
His expertise spans critical cultural studies, media history, and political economy. He speaks English, Japanese, and Korean, and his office is located at PEL.7.01D at LSE.
