Junghwan Rhee is a Professor and Assistant Chair in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Central Oklahoma, where he also serves as Director of the Center for Cybersecurity Leaders, Education, and Research (CLEAR) and Assistant Director of the Center for Research and Education in Interdisciplinary Computation (CREIC). Previously, he spent nine years as a senior researcher and security team lead at NEC Laboratories America.
- Ph.D. in Computer Science from Purdue University (2011)
- M.S. in Computer Science from The University of Texas at Austin (2005)
- B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Korea University, Seoul, South Korea (2003)
Dr. Rhee's research focuses on System Security and Reliability, tackling challenges in System Diagnosis, End-host Security, and System Provenance through program analysis, runtime systems, operating systems, and increasingly AI techniques. His work bridges theoretical security concepts with practical applications in enterprise environments, IoT, and cyber-physical systems. He has developed innovative approaches for malware detection, system provenance analysis, and security diagnostics that have been adopted in both academic and industry settings.
An analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong trajectory toward applying machine learning to traditional security problems, with significant work in autonomous vehicle security, embedded systems security, and enterprise threat detection. His research consistently appears in top-tier security venues including IEEE S&P, NDSS, and USENIX Security, demonstrating both technical depth and practical relevance to real-world security challenges.
Dr. Rhee has received several prestigious awards including the 2017 and 2015 Business Contribution Awards from NEC Laboratories America and the 2016 CEATEC Award.
- 2017 Business Contribution Award. NEC Laboratories America, January 2018
- 2016 CEATEC Award, October 2016
- 2015 Business Contribution Award. NEC Laboratories America, April 2015
He actively mentors students through research assistantships and has developed a strong cybersecurity program at UCO, including courses that align with industry certifications like CompTIA CySA+, Pentest+, and Security+. Dr. Rhee serves on program committees for major security conferences including NDSS, ESORICS, and ACM ASIACCS, where he has held leadership roles such as Technical Program Chair for SERA conferences.
As Director of CLEAR, Dr. Rhee leads initiatives that integrate cybersecurity education, research, and workforce development, creating hands-on learning experiences that prepare students for real-world security challenges.
