Julius B. Fleming Jr. is an Associate Professor of English at Washington University in St. Louis, specializing in Afro-diasporic literatures and cultures. His research focuses on performance studies, black political culture, diaspora, colonialism, and intersections with race, gender, and sexuality. He earned a PhD in English and a graduate certificate in Africana Studies from the University of Pennsylvania.
His notable work includes the book Black Patience: Performance, Civil Rights, and the Unfinished Project of Emancipation (NYU Press, 2022), which explores the role of theater in the Civil Rights Movement and received multiple prestigious awards. Fleming has published in journals such as American Literature, American Literary History, and Callaloo.
He has held fellowships from the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation, the Mellon Foundation, and the Carter G. Woodson Institute. Currently, he serves on the Editorial Board of Southern Cultures and is developing two new projects: one on speculative geographies of empire and colonialism, and another on the history of black nightlife.
