Juliet Johnston is an Assistant Professor of Environmental Microbiology and Bioremediation at Hampshire College’s School of Natural Science. Her research centers on microbial communities in wastewater, biodegradation, and bioremediation, with a focus on transcriptomic responses and microbial encapsulation techniques. She teaches courses spanning environmental microbiology, bioinformatics, and environmental engineering.
- B.S., Clemson University
- Ph.D., University of Minnesota (Environmental Engineering)
- Postdoctoral Researcher, Georgia Institute of Technology
- Postdoctoral Researcher, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
Her work integrates computational methods with hands-on lab practices, particularly in analyzing 16S rRNA gene amplicons and metagenomic data. She collaborates with Dr. Jennifer VanWyk on bee gut microbiome projects and advocates for LGBTQ+ inclusion in STEM through the Queer Science outreach initiative.
Juliet’s teaching emphasizes the intersection of science and social justice, evident in courses like Environmental Engineering Principles and Queering STEM Education. She is also developing an educational video game focused on wastewater treatment microbiology.
