Dr. Juliet Gilbert is an Associate Professor in Social Anthropology and African Studies at the Department of African Studies and Anthropology, University of Birmingham. Her research focuses on youth studies, Pentecostalism, insecure livelihoods, and aspects of popular culture including fashion, beauty pageants, and mobile phones.

Her work examines how young women navigate uncertainty in Calabar, Nigeria, through strategies involving religion, education, and cultural practices. She conducted fifteen months of fieldwork between 2011-2012, focusing on Pentecostal churches, sewing apprenticeships, and beauty pageants.
Recent publications analyze mobile technology's impact on social networks (2019), Pentecostal self-construction (2016), religious pageant rituals (2015), and African youth agency (2013). Her research connects urban anthropology, gender studies, and digital sociology.
