Dr Julien Tailhades is a Research Fellow in the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at Monash University, Australia. He received his PhD from the University of Montpellier (France) in 2010 and joined Monash in 2016 under the mentorship of Assoc. Prof. Max Cryle. His research focuses on peptide-based medicinal chemistry, particularly reviving 'old' peptide antibiotics to combat resistant bacteria. Key areas include lipopeptide antibiotics (e.g., ramoplanin), glycopeptide synthesis (e.g., vancomycin), and solid-phase peptide methodologies emphasizing greener chemistry and on-resin cyclization.
- Education: PhD in Biochemistry (University of Montpellier, 2010)
His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and innovation. Notable research interests involve enzymatic/chemical synthesis of bioactive peptides and developing alternatives to conventional antibiotics. Recent collaborations span international institutions, focusing on peptide engineering and antibiotic resistance mechanisms.
He has supervised multiple students, including Evan Lo, Jemma Gullick, Samuel Hoo, and Komal Prasad. His 2018 BDI Travel Award highlights his recognition in the field. Current activities include chairing the Peptide User Group (PUG) and advancing antibiotic-chemoattractant therapies.
