Professor Julien Louys is a palaeontologist specializing in the mammalian fossil record and palaeoecology at Griffith University's School of Environment and Science. He holds a PhD from the University of NSW (2008) and degrees in Science and Mathematics from the University of Newcastle (2003-2004). His research focuses on the interactions between ancient humans, mammals, and environments, with a particular emphasis on vertebrate palaeoecology, stable isotope analysis, and community structure analysis.
He leads the Australian Research Centre for Human Evolution and has been affiliated with the Environmental Futures Research Institute. His work spans Australia and Asia, including fieldwork in Sumatra, Mongolia, and Indonesia. Notably, he has described six new species and three new genera of mammals. Louys has secured significant grants, including an ARC Future Fellowship (2017-2024) and funding from the National Geographic Society and Hermon Slade Foundation.
His research interests include conservation biology, archaeology, and the application of interdisciplinary methods to reconstruct past environments. He supervises doctoral students in projects ranging from feral cat evolution to underwater cave palaeontology. Awards include recognition as a National Geographic Explorer and his Future Fellowship.
