Julien Laurent is a Lecturer at the University of Strasbourg, affiliated with the Laboratory of Engineering, Computer Science and Imaging Sciences (ICube Laboratory). He also teaches at ENGEES (Ecole Nationale du Génie de l'Eau et de l'Environnement) where he is responsible for the Specialized Master's in 'Drinking Water and Sanitation'.
Dr. Laurent's research focuses on water and wastewater treatment processes, with particular expertise in activated sludge systems, secondary clarifier modeling, and microalgae-bacteria consortia for wastewater remediation. His work integrates experimental studies with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling to optimize treatment processes. He has developed expertise in using ultrasonic sensors for monitoring sedimentation processes and has contributed significantly to the understanding of sludge densification technologies.
His recent publications reveal a strong trend toward integrating advanced computational modeling with practical wastewater treatment applications, particularly in secondary clarifier optimization and high rate algal pond systems. His research shows increasing focus on resource recovery from wastewater through innovative biological processes.
Dr. Laurent has supervised numerous doctoral students working on topics including secondary clarifier modeling, activated sludge processes, and microalgae-bacteria systems for wastewater treatment. His research has been supported by collaborations with major water companies including SUEZ.
He conducts his research within the MecaFlu team of the ICube laboratory, where he has established experimental facilities including pilot-scale high rate algal ponds and advanced monitoring systems for wastewater treatment processes.
